Poplar Grove Baptist Church was organized in May 1888.  Records indicate that the church probably began meeting in a log schoolhouse.  Additional land was donated in 1897, which enlarged the property area to a little over an acre.  A new one-room frame house was built during this time.

During World War I, the church disbanded for a short period of time.  In the early 1920's, a young preacher, Jim Roberson and his friend Bevy Jones led in reestabling the church.  It began with a singing school taught by Mr. Jones, followed by a three week revival.  Regular services were restored, and soon the church had 50 members on the roll.  The school relocated in 1931 and the building was left to the congregation.

Under the leadership of the Stone Association's Missionary, John Brown, and the Women's Missionary Union, a building fund was started.  In 1944, a basement was built of stones gathered from a nearby field, the sanctuary was built, and heat was provided by a coal furnace.  Church membership had more than doubled and Sunday School classes were meeting outside under the trees.

By the early 1950's, growth in the Sunday morning and evening services made it necessary to build a two story addition at the back of the sanctuary.  This addition contained a Pastor's study, classrooms, a kitchen, a fellowship hall, and restrooms.  The entire structure was then bricked.

In the early 1970's additional land was added to enlarge the parking area and build a parsonage.

In 1986, construction began on the north wing which provided additional classroom space, restrooms, and a new fellowship hall.  A baptistry was installed behind the pulpit, and the remainder of the building was renovated.

Over the years, God has brought many great men to pastor our congregation, but in 1992, God sent His man to lead this church into a new season of spiritual and physical growth.  The church called on Pastor Bobby Sebastian to come as bi-vocational Pastor in November of 1992.  The church began to experience growth as never seen before.  It quickly became apparent the church's facilities could no longer handle the number of people coming to the Grove.  On August 1, 1997, we broke ground on a brand new facility about a mile from the past location.  The new sanctuary, classrooms, and fellowship hall began to fill and new full-time staff members were added.  In 2003, a new family life building (with a gym, classrooms, and offices) was added.  The growth hasn't stopped.  The church has purchased more land adjacent to our property, and we continue to seek new ways to maxmize space in our current facility.

Because of the vision of those who came before us, the Grove has been reaching into the lives of those in our community for over 100 years.  We meet together to seek His Presence, and continually learn more about Him- transforming our lives into what He would have us to be.
